About this Tutorial

We'd all like to see something different in our teams, or approaches, or environments. Instead of continuing inaction, let's be the change we seek! In this session, we'll consider 5 techniques to help you instigate positive change.

The hour will be split across hands on activitiesand discussion of techniques to instigate change.

About the Speaker

Spencer is a consultant, coach and mentor in lean UX & agile UX, an ex-designer, sometime Ruby programmer and ardent proponent of visual communication.

At Cultivate, he works at the intersection of product management, design and development to help teams make great digital products. He believes a user focused approach, iteration, lean experiments, good metrics and honesty are the way to deliver successful and engaging digital products.

Spencer has run lean UX workshops at Lean Day London and the Scottish Ruby Conference, spoken at UX Scotland and Product Tank and mentored at Startup Weekend.

He facilitates workshops, works with teams to build products and helps companies - from international banks to 2-person startups - to understand and solve their problems better.

Case Study/Experience Report

A presentation and discussion of real-life (not theoretical) experiences of the application (or mis-application) of service design techniques. Case studies and experience reports include some discussion of lessons learned and an indication of how novel the work is.


Participants learn a new approach, tool or technology through using it to solve one or more practical exercises. Any software/hardware requirements are disclosed in the session description.


A session focused around some specific tool, technique or issue. Primarily led by the speaker, tutorials usually include some elements of interactivity or individual / group exercise.


An in-depth working session on a specific topic. May include paper presentations.

Lightning Talks

Short talks (max 10 minutes) on almost any topic.
